How we research, write, and maintain our guides
Our Mission
HelpDebtExit.com exists to give borrowers accurate, specific, actionable information about high-interest consumer debt. We focus on factual information that is verifiable from primary sources — court records, CFPB enforcement actions, SEC filings, state AG consent decrees, and government statutes — not general advice or opinion.
Who Writes Our Content
Our guides are written by experienced researchers and consumer-finance writers. Every article that contains legal or regulatory information is reviewed by an editor familiar with consumer debt law before publication. Author and reviewer credentials are displayed in the byline of each article.
Research Standards
We rely on primary sources wherever possible:
- Court records — class action settlements, consent orders, and judgments from PACER and state court databases
- Regulatory actions — CFPB enforcement actions at consumerfinance.gov/enforcement, FTC actions, and state AG consent decrees
- SEC filings — 10-K and 10-Q disclosures for publicly traded lenders (Enova, Elevate, etc.)
- Statutes and regulations — state usury caps, licensing statutes, and federal consumer-protection laws
- Borrower reports — BBB complaints, Reddit threads, and app-store reviews, clearly labeled as anecdotal and not treated as verified data
When we report settlement ranges or collection timelines, we distinguish documented examples from typical ranges and note the basis for each claim.
Fact-Checking Process
All factual claims — monetary figures, case citations, APR ranges, and regulatory findings — are verified against primary sources before publication. A second editor reviews each piece before it goes live. Pages that pass fact-checking display a "Fact checked" badge in the byline.
Independence From Advertisers
Advertising revenue does not influence our editorial decisions. Advertisers have no input into which lenders we cover, how we describe regulatory actions, or what settlement ranges we report. Our editorial team operates independently of our advertising operations.
We do not accept payment from lenders, debt settlement companies, law firms, or credit counseling agencies in exchange for favorable coverage or top placement in any guide. If we ever introduce an affiliate or sponsored-content relationship, it will be clearly labeled on the relevant page.
Update Policy
Consumer debt law and lender practices change. We review high-traffic pages at least quarterly and update them when:
- A new regulatory action, court ruling, or settlement is announced
- A lender changes its fee structure, rebrands, or ceases operations
- A state passes new legislation affecting the debt or lending covered
- A reader or legal professional alerts us to an error
The "Updated" date in each article byline reflects the date of the most recent substantive revision — not a formatting change.
Corrections Policy
We correct factual errors promptly. If you find an error, email editorial@helpdebtexit.com with the page URL and the specific claim you believe is incorrect, along with a source. We will review it within 5 business days. Significant corrections are noted at the bottom of the relevant article.
What We Do Not Cover
We do not provide personalized debt advice, recommend specific attorneys, or evaluate individual loan agreements. We do not publish sponsored reviews, accept payment for favorable mentions, or rate lenders on a star system. Our role is to explain how these products work and what options borrowers have — not to endorse or rank them.
